According to Kara Alaimo’s article about cutback on screen time, a defect in cognitive development and the screen time have a positive correlation. Alaimo argues that the more teenagers or babies spend their time on smartphones, especially on social media, then the more they will be mentally and intellectually deficient. Alaimo also points out the harmful effects of using social media such as cyber bullying, lack of in-person social interaction, decline in overall development. Alaimo suggests that teenagers should stop using smartphones and try to do alternatives for fun because using smartphones is harmful for their life.

Alaimo uses logos to support her idea that smartphones are harmful for teenagers. Alaimo mentions 95% of teens have access to a smartphone and 45% constantly uses internet. This shows how pervasive the smartphone is and how broad and big the problem is. Then she reminds the readers that the smartphone can cause “depression and to have suicidal thoughts”, “force teens to confront stressful situation”, and “slowing down the overall development of teens”. The list of disadvantages and harms of using smartphone warms the reader to stop use the internet and suggest them to have in-person social interaction so that they can escape from smartphones.

I do agree that smartphones cause all kinds of different problems. Smartphones do cause some students to feel depressions and lonely because interactions happening through internet is not effective enough as in-person interactions. However, the opinion that smartphones make the teenagers to be cognitively deficient is not relevant. Smartphones do not make teenagers stupid, but rather to feel depressed. Slower development and smartphones do not have strong correlation between them.
